The Odyssey

1.The Odyssey shows a perfect example of how Greek culture, values, and religion is so different compared to the 21st century. There are so many differences in the roles as men and women and how they act toward society. Men, in Greek culture, are seen as strong, powerful, and always in control. Women are seen as being in the house caring for the children and keeping things orderly, while being loyal to only one man. One big difference between the two roles is, is that men are really men when they have bed many women and women are whores when they bed more then there husbands. The Clothing in the culture is also very different then today. The Greeks mainly only wear skirts, tops and over clothes, women wearing wraps around their face. Another major part of Greek culture and religion is their belief in gods and goddesses. Greeks have a very strong belief that there are gods and goddesses that have powers much greater then man. Like Zeus is the ruler of the sky and then there is Poseidon who is the god of the sea. There are also certain gods or goddesses that are their guides through life. Like in the Odyssey Athena was Odysseus's goddess who helped him see what he had to do. Instead of one god, like we have today, the Greeks believe in many. These gods are their guides through life and the gods want them to think that man is nothing without them. The Greeks have great honor in them and believe everything they say. When the greeks need something they give their god a sacrifice such as a goat head or lamb. Which brings in food. The Greeks seem to like a lot of cheese, wine, bread, meat and olive oil. In the movie, The Odyssey, it seems to be the only thing they eat. Greeks are bigs fans of wine and cheese and that is one of there main foods.
